Infrared sauna for heart health — Trowbridge, Wiltshire

You want to take care of your heart.

Your heart is the engine of everything. And while most of us know we should look after it, the reality of daily life stress, sedentary work, disrupted sleep makes it genuinely difficult to keep cardiovascular health on track.

Regular infrared sauna sessions at our Trowbridge wellness spa offer one of the most evidence-backed, low-effort ways to support your heart. Not as a replacement for exercise or medical care but as a meaningful, enjoyable addition to a heart-healthy life.

Passive cardiovascular work while you relax

When you sit in an infrared sauna, your body responds to the rising temperature in ways that closely mirror the effects of moderate aerobic exercise. Your heart rate increases, blood vessels dilate and blood flow rises significantly from a resting rate of around 5 litres per minute to as much as 12 litres per minute during a session.

This is sometimes called a ‘passive cardio workout’. The cardiovascular system is being challenged and strengthened without the physical demand of exercise making infrared sauna particularly valuable for people who cannot exercise due to injury, illness or physical limitations.

  WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS
•  Kuopio Ischemic Heart Disease Risk Factor Study (JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015 and 2018) — 2,315 Finnish men tracked for up to 20 years. Men who used saunas 4–7 times per week had a 50% lower risk of fatal cardiovascular disease compared to once-weekly users. Effect sizes comparable to those of regular exercise.

•  Infrared sauna therapy shown to improve flow-mediated dilation, reduce blood pressure and enhance exercise tolerance in multiple randomised controlled trials.

•  Clinical research shows far-infrared therapy increases production of nitric oxide, a molecule that relaxes blood vessels and improves vascular function.

•  Regular sauna use associated with reduced risk of hypertension — one long-term Finnish study found a nearly 50% reduction in hypertension risk among 4–7 sessions per week users compared to once-weekly.

•  Studies show improved markers of arterial stiffness and endothelial function following regular infrared sauna use — both key indicators of cardiovascular health.

What to expect from regular sessions

  • Improved circulation — blood vessels become more flexible and responsive with regular heat exposure
  • Lower resting blood pressure — shown in multiple studies after consistent sauna use over weeks
  • Better oxygen delivery — increased blood flow means more oxygen reaching muscles and organs
  • Reduced cardiovascular risk — particularly significant for people with sedentary lifestyles or desk jobs
  • A natural complement to existing exercise — many members combine sauna sessions with their gym or running routine
